The latest CPI report was a tad cooler than consensus. Our scorecard suggests the modest disinflationary regime is likely to persist.

U.S. Treasury interest rates continued to climb in the second quarter of 2024, although more modestly than they did in the first quarter. Large rate increases across the yield curve in April were mostly reversed in May and June, leaving overall base rates 10 to 20 basis points higher at quarter end. October is often a tough month for risk assets. Some of the stock market’s biggest sell offs in history have occurred in this first full month of fall in the northern hemisphere. Credit instruments often trade in sympathy with equities, if not in lock step occasionally. 

The S&P 500’s estimated bottom-up operating EPS shrank 2% during the first month of Q3 reporting (Chart 1). A similar, slighter larger drop in the EPS estimate was experienced in July, as results were tallied for Q2’s first month of reporting. That initial Q2 deficit was recouped over the next two months and actual results eventually ended higher than what was projected at the beginning of earnings season. 

The Major Trend Index was unchanged at a High Neutral reading of +1 in the week ended November 22nd, and its four factor categories held steady at their recent levels. After a minor reduction in our tactical portfolios’ equity hedge in early November, those accounts are positioned with net equity exposure of 58%. 

Another year in the proverbial books. Looking back on 2024, there have been quite a few surprises.  The U.S. economy remained resilient despite the "experts" calling for an imminent recession. Stock indexes registered new highs as AI (artificial intelligence) fever seemed to promise endless prosperity.

Happy New Year! As we reflect on 2024, we entered the year with modest expectations amid a complex and uncertain environment. The stock market, however, demonstrated resilience, delivering strong results. Artificial Intelligence (AI) was a key focus for investors and stock index returns were skewed by outsized returns on a handful of megacap tech stocks.

It is possible that value investing is genuinely dead, as a few have surmised. To our knowledge the coroner has not yet issued a final report, but the evidence is mounting. In the collection of evidence, we continue to note the valuation chasm between cheap and expensive companies in U.S. equity markets. This phenomenon is not unprecedented, but the current iteration grew gapingly large and seems unusually persistent.

Once a part of the structural foundation of equity markets, the community of value-oriented boutiques has been significantly impacted by these distortive phenomena. It is indeed a business strategy offering little insulation from these challenges. A number of firms have closed, while some others have adjusted their strategies to be more in keeping with the present investing zeitgeist. 

The Major Trend Index was unchanged at a Neutral reading of zero in the week ended January 31st. The leading Technology stocks have so far managed to shrug off the sudden emergence of an ultra low-cost competitor to existing AI models. In fact, our weekly Chart Scores for both the NASDAQ Composite and NYSE FANG+ Indexes remain at maximum bullish levels.

Sector rotation is a well-respected technique for building equity portfolios. After several years of underperformance relative to large caps, small and mid-cap equities may be approaching an inflection point. As monetary policy, valuations, and capital investment trends evolve, investors are reconsidering where future growth and value may emerge.

The Major Trend Index continues to offer a lukewarm affirmation of the bull market, remaining at a High Neutral reading of +1 for the week ended November 14th. That’s enough of an endorsement for us to keep tactical asset allocation portfolios positioned with moderate net equity exposure of 55%.

The summer lull in European financial markets didn’t extend to distressed investing this year, and August 
saw a flurry of activity. In particular it was the loan space which saw the uptick in activity which is typically 
quieter than the bond market due to the private nature of the loans market. There was a sharp increase in 
the number of loans classified as stressed or distressed from 75 loans from 43 companies at the end of July 
to 97 loans from 49 companies at the end of August.

The Major Trend Index flipped back to High Neutral for the week ended November 
28th. A lot of the chart and momentum-score damage from two weeks ago has been 
spackled over with the market’s admirable bounce into month-end, warranting the 
Technical upgrade.

55%. Last week, I spent a few spare minutes locating and inventorying long lost silver 
coins at my house. I’m guessing I’m not the only one with a renewed interest in sock 
drawers and old shoe boxes.

The Major Trend Index ended the week of January 2nd at High Neutral. We’re 
now six weeks removed from the breakdown in our Technical work that triggered some indigestion—and a brief downgrade to Neutral—just before Thanksgiving. Leuthold tactical allocation strategies start the new year with 
net equity exposure of 56%.

For most of this century, advisors have relied on a barbell portfolio approach to core equity: index funds on one side for low-cost beta, high-conviction active managers on the other for differentiated alpha.

But today’s markets look different. Indexes have grown more concentrated, behaving less like broad market exposure and more like momentum trades in a handful of mega-caps. Meanwhile, many active managers continue to struggle with the risk of style reversals and extended drawdowns, leaving advisors with fewer reliable tools at the center of their portfolios.

Markets are full of stories. One year it’s the promise of tech dominance, the next it’s the resurgence of value, or the latest conviction stock touted as the next big winner. These narratives may capture attention, but they rarely endure. For advisors, leaning on stock stories or style cycles often means building portfolios on shifting ground.

For many advisors, the middle ground between passive indexing and high-conviction active has been factor investing. Tilt toward value, quality, or profitability, and the story goes, clients get systematic exposure to traits that have historically driven outperformance.  

Most investors assume portfolio growth is simply the weighted sum of the returns of the stocks inside it. If the companies in the portfolio do well, the portfolio grows in line.  

But that view is incomplete. According to Stochastic Portfolio Theory, portfolio growth comes from two independent sources: stock effects and volatility effects. One reflects the companies you own. The other reflects how those companies move together.  

The first full week of 2026 featured another upgrade to our Cyclical work—the second in 
the last month. This bump was not enough to move the overall Major Trend Index out of 
High Neutral, however. Net equity exposure in Leuthold tactical accounts continues to rise 
with the market and now stands at 57%.

The Major Trend Index stayed at High Neutral for the week ending January 16th. The constant drum of new highs and a broadening market has pushed our technical work to the brink of another upgrade. Inside the scope of the MTI, the new year is off to a terrific start. However, if we tracked Cyclical components called “Threats to Central Bank Independence” or “Status of Intergovernmental Military Alliances,” both would be decidedly negative after the first few weeks of 2026. Net equity exposure in Leuthold tactical accounts continues to rise with the market and now stands at 57-58%.

In this piece, we will explore why today’s mixed economic and market signals feel confusing, and what matters most for investors. If the economy feels hard to read right now, you are not imagining it. There are various crosscurrents, and together, they suggest an economy that is slowing in feel, but not in fact.

The Major Trend Index stayed at High Neutral for the week ending January 23rd. The smattering of new highs was not enough to upgrade our Technical category to maximum bullish. Net equity exposure remains on the rise in Leuthold tactical accounts and now stands at 58%. For the time being, we’re comfortable letting our long positions run, but are mindful of the market’s valuation risk profile.

The Fed’s latest projections are optimistic for 2026

• Stronger Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth – 2.3%

The Major Trend Index closed out the month of January at High Neutral. Last week featured fresh all-time highs in the S&P 500 and our S&P Cyclical Index (Cons. Discretionary, Materials, and Industrials). A decent capstone to a month of impressive Technical gains, especially within our Breadth/Leadership subcategory. Net equity exposure in Leuthold tactical accounts was unchanged at 58%.

The Major Trend Index ended the week of February 6th at High Neutral. Our bellwether indexes provided another cluster of confirmation for the health of this market, with five of the eight posting new all-time highs on Friday. However, the dispersion of returns for the first week of February was considerable. The S&P 400 and 600 both gained roughly 4%, while the cap-weighted S&P 500 needed every bit of Friday’s 2% gain to break even for the week. Net equity exposure in Leuthold tactical accounts moved higher and sits at 59%.

 The Major Trend Index ended the week of February 6th at High Neutral. Our bellwether indexes provided another cluster of confirmation for the health of this market, with five of the eight posting new all-time highs on Friday. However, the dispersion of returns for the first week of February was considerable. The S&P 400 and 600 both gained roughly 4%, while the cap-weighted S&P 500 needed every bit of Friday’s 2% gain to break even for the week. Net equity exposure in Leuthold tactical accounts moved higher and sits at 59%. 

 We have been struck by the number of seemingly contrasting signals within the economy and financial markets today. Ultimately, the outcomes of these competing elements will dictate the path of future economic growth, interest rates, and opportunities in capital markets. 

 As the market sorts out the self-inflicted tariff mess, the Major Trend Index closed out the third week of February at High Neutral. Net equity exposure in Leuthold tactical accounts remained at 59%. 

The AI doomsday debate consumed the market last week. The near-future possibility of rampant white-collar unemployment, private credit and mortgage defaults, a cratering of consumer spending, and rapid obsolescence of established business models will now have to share the stage with a very real war in Iran. Markets have traditionally shrugged off geopolitical events after an initial burst of volatility, especially recently. However, a widespread, protracted conflict in the Middle East may upend that convention. Net equity exposure in Leuthold tactical accounts ended the month at 58-59%.

Deteriorating Cyclical and Technical readings pushed the Leuthold Major Trend Index down to Neutral last week, as escalating conflict in the Middle East with the Strait of Hormuz effectively closed and regional energy infrastructure under attack drove a 36% spike in crude prices and raised the specter of a significant global oil shock. With inflation pressures surfacing, bond yields backing up, and small-cap indexes shedding 5% while breadth narrows, net equity exposure in Leuthold tactical accounts was trimmed from 56% to 51% through a combination of reduced long positions and added shorts.

Listed real estate offers investors liquid, accessible exposure to high-quality global property portfolios spanning REITs, operating companies, and specialty sectors across a roughly $6 trillion universe. Short-term market volatility can create opportunities to acquire these assets at discounts to intrinsic value, making it a compelling avenue for diversification and long-term structural growth. 

The Leuthold Major Trend Index held Neutral for the week ending March 13, with net equity exposure at 50–51% and the S&P 500 just 5% off its January high despite three straight weekly declines. Sentiment deteriorated sharply nine bearish signals triggered a second category upgrade in three weeks but Leuthold isn't calling it a contrarian buy, noting the market's AI-driven, momentum-heavy, overvalued backdrop limits that signal's reliability. On inflation, the Cash Commodity Diffusion Index hit its highest level since late 2022, led by energy and metals, while agricultural commodities remain disinflationary. 

The Leuthold Major Trend Index held Neutral for the week ending March 20, with net equity exposure at 49–50%, as markets weakened amid geopolitical tensions and rising yields. Technical indicators saw a second downgrade in three weeks after the S&P 500 broke below its November lows, though a rebound could still restore stronger trends. Meanwhile, valuations improved slightly with the pullback, and despite the recent decline, market breadth does not yet signal a definitive market top.  

The Leuthold Group's latest Major Trend Index report flags a deteriorating technical outlook, with the overall MTI downgraded to Low Neutral for the week ending March 27th. A new sell signal from the S&P 500 Stop-and-Reverse Model drove net equity exposure in tactical accounts down to 46%. With larger-cap indexes sliding and parallels emerging to last spring's tariff-driven decline, the report suggests markets may only be halfway through the current pullback. 

Real estate markets are being reshaped by structural forces supply chain reconfiguration, chronic housing undersupply, and shifting capital flows that are creating long-term opportunities across global property sectors. For investors who understand what drives fundamentals beneath the surface, today's valuation dislocations and evolving market dynamics may offer a compelling case for revisiting listed real estate as a strategic part of a broader portfolio.  

The Leuthold Group's latest Major Trend Index report marks an upgrade to Neutral for the week ending April 10, 2026, driven by a strong V-shaped recovery in equity markets. The S&P 500 gained nearly 8% over seven of the last eight sessions, pushing most indexes back above their 200-day moving averages and within reach of all-time highs. While the technical picture has improved meaningfully, inflation is emerging as the key risk — headline CPI hit its hottest monthly reading in four years, and ISM Prices Paid for both manufacturing and services reached levels not seen since mid-2022. Leuthold's current stance: cautiously optimistic, with net equity exposure held steady at 49%.  

The Leuthold Group's latest Major Trend Index report upgrades the overall MTI to High Neutral for the week ending April 17, 2026, as the S&P 500, Nasdaq, and Russell 2000 all posted fresh all-time highs on their best weekly gains of the recent rally. Technicals moved to +3 as the Stop and Reverse model flipped back to positive, pushing net equity exposure to 51% though Leuthold notes the model isn't ready to chase the market higher just yet. Breadth remains a concern, with cap-weighted indexes significantly outpacing equal-weighted peers, and valuations are approaching a downgrade as price surges faster than earnings. The silver lining: a spike in forward earnings estimates particularly in SMID has helped temper multiple expansion heading into Q1 earnings season. 

The Major Trend Index holds at High Neutral, with Leuthold's tactical accounts maintaining 51% net equity exposure. The S&P 500 notched its fifth all-time closing high in eight sessions, completing a 100% gain since the bull market began in October 2022, though weekly returns were modest and triggered minimal MTI scoring changes.

Semiconductors remain the dominant story: the PHLX Semiconductor Index closed Friday on an 18-day win streak, up 47% over that span, fueling chip and AI-heavy indexes while broader market breadth narrows. The S&P 500 Equal Weighted index's YTD lead has essentially vanished the average stock is up just 7% since the March 30th bounce, versus 13% for the cap-weighted index. Leuthold characterizes the current Technical picture as resembling the middle six months of 2025 - Info Tech dominated and narrow noting that the S&P 500's latest high looks more consistent with prior market tops than the broad-based highs seen this past winter.

The Major Trend Index remains at High Neutral, with Leuthold tactical accounts holding net equity exposure at 51%. Despite the S&P 500 notching a third consecutive Friday at all-time highs joined by the Russell 2000, scores weakened across most categories.
